Josiana Mabombo is a photographer from DR Congo, based in Vienna. She photographs events, portraits, and community moments — turning them into images that people don't just look at, but feel.

She first encountered photography at die Graphische, Vienna's media and design school. But it didn't click right away. The real turning point came in 2022.

I didn't know photography could be this fun until I attended their workshop!

That workshop, organized by Schwarze Frauen Community, changed everything. Photography stopped being a school subject and became something personal — a way to express herself and connect with others.

Since then, she has built her practice through dedication and consistency, photographing important events and working with a wide range of clients and people.

My biggest achievement is turning my passion for photography into something meaningful and recognized. Coming from where I started, I didn't have a clear path, but I stayed consistent and kept improving.

Her Personal Insights

Josiana's roots in DR Congo and her life in Austria have shaped who she is as a photographer. Being connected to more than one place has given her a particular sensitivity to people and their stories.

My roots take me back to where I come from, but also to the journey of being connected to more than one place. This experience has shaped my identity and perspective, and it reflects in my work through the way I capture people, emotions and diverse stories.

Her work is also built on what drives her at its core:

What drives me is the passion to turn moments into something lasting. I want people to look at my photos and feel something, not just see something.

Working with different clients has tested her along the way — but she sees those challenges as part of the growth.

It taught me how important it is to stay calm, adaptable, and solution-oriented, even in challenging situations. These experiences helped me grow not just as a photographer, but also as a human.

Her Impact & Outreach

For Josiana, photography is a way of giving back. She uses her camera to give visibility to people and moments that matter.

My work gives back by giving people visibility and capturing their stories. Through my photography, I'm able to highlight moments, achievements and individuals who deserve to be seen and remembered.

Her recognition has come through the trust people place in her — repeat clients, invitations to document meaningful events, and opportunities that keep growing.

I see recognition not only in awards, but in the trust people place in me and the way my work continues to open new doors!

Her Vision & What’s Next

Josiana is focused on growing — as a photographer and as a person. She wants to keep taking on new challenges and building a lasting presence in her field.

“I want to keep learning, improving and creating work that has meaning and impact.”

And to those just starting out, she keeps it simple: “Stay consistent, be patient, and trust your process. Growth takes time.” Her own guiding quote says it all: “Nothing changes if nothing changes.
